Checks to Complete When Providing a Compression Garment to a Patient
Providing a compression garment involves more than handing over the correct product. The first fitting, instruction on use and follow-up guidance are important parts of professional care.
First Fitting and Product Check
Where possible, assess the garment on the patient before handing it over. Check that it fits the intended areas evenly without obvious gaps, slipping or rolling.
Also check the position of closures, seams and edges in relation to sensitive areas.
What Information Should Patients Receive?
Patients should know how to put on and remove the garment correctly. Explain clearly that the surgeon determines daily wear time.
Explain washing and care requirements, along with the points to watch during use.
Patient Guidance During Follow-up
Fit may change as postoperative swelling subsides. Explain that noticeable looseness, persistent slipping or changes in the garment's shape may require reassessment.
Do not try to address unusual clinical symptoms simply by changing the garment; refer the patient to a healthcare professional.
