Why Fastening Systems Matter When Selecting Postoperative Garments

Zips and hook-and-eye closures are important design features to consider when selecting postoperative compression garments, particularly for ease of dressing, protection around incisions and patient comfort.

The Role of Closures in Postoperative Use

Postoperative mobility may be limited, making dressing more difficult than usual. Zips and hook-and-eye fastenings can help patients put on and remove compression garments.

Having a closure is not enough on its own. Assess its position, ease of operation and relationship to the treated area together.

Assessing Incisions and Sensitive Areas

Check whether the zip or hook-and-eye closure lies over an incision, sensitive tissue or an area of significant swelling. A poorly positioned closure can exert unwanted pressure on a specific point.

Protective fabric or padding beneath the closure may reduce direct contact between hard components and the skin and help improve comfort.

What Should Be Checked at the First Fitting?

After fitting the garment, check both the operation of the closure and its effect on the overall fit.

If the zip pulls, the hooks are excessively strained or the fastening line folds, reassess the garment's size and style.
