Measurements Before and After Surgery: When Should You Measure?
Explains the role of preoperative measurements in initial sizing and the need for reassessment as postoperative swelling subsides.
The Role of Preoperative Measurements
Preoperative measurements provide a starting reference for planning the first postoperative garment. This allows preparation before surgery so a garment is available during the first days of recovery.
Preoperative measurements alone are not sufficient. The extent of surgery, volume removed and subsequent swelling can quickly change body circumferences.
The Role of Postoperative Measurements
Swelling can increase circumferences early after surgery. Measurements taken then reflect the patient's current condition, not necessarily their longer-term size.
The fit changes as swelling subsides. Follow-up measurements are therefore important for maintaining balanced compression during recovery.
Who May Particularly Benefit From Follow-Up Measurements?
Discuss a measurement plan in advance for patients likely to have significant size changes, including whether one garment will remain suitable or another size may be needed.
