Stage 1 and Stage 2 Compression Garments
Explains the differences in purpose and use between Stage 1 garments for early recovery and Stage 2 garments that may be considered after swelling subsides.
Stage 1: Early Recovery
Stage 1 garments are designed for early postoperative use, when swelling may be significant and movement limited. Ease of putting on and removing the garment is particularly important.
Wide openings, adjustable sections and features that improve access are therefore common priorities in Stage 1 designs.
Stage 2: After Swelling Has Reduced
As swelling subsides, the first garment may become loose. A Stage 2 garment may then be considered.
Stage 2 garments generally offer a closer fit and a smoother profile. Ease of wearing them under clothing becomes more relevant as patients return to daily activities.
How Is the Transition Timed?
There is no fixed timetable for changing stages. The decision considers swelling, current fit, comfort and the surgeon's protocol together.
A noticeably looser fit, reduced contact with the body or loss of support are common reasons for reassessment.
