What Should You Do if a Compression Garment Leaves Marks on Your Skin?

Not all marks left by compression garments mean the same thing. Learn when marks need checking and what to look out for.

Why Can Skin Marks Occur?

Close-fitting garments may leave temporary marks from fabric or seams. Pronounced, persistent marks may be associated with folded fabric or increased local pressure.

Consider not only the mark itself, but also whether it is accompanied by pain, numbness, changes in skin colour or significant discomfort.

Check the Garment's Position First

Check whether the garment is rolled or its seams or edges are pressing firmly on one spot. Do not tighten it further or change size without your doctor's advice.

When Should You Seek Advice?

Severe pain, a marked colour change, numbness, coldness or unusual swelling requires assessment of garment use by a healthcare professional.
