Swelling After Liposuction: How Much Is Normal?
Why swelling occurs after surgery, how it may change over time and why recovery differs between patients.
Why Swelling Occurs
Edema is a natural response to surgery. Fluid accumulates in the treated area, making it appear swollen.
Your appearance in the early postoperative period therefore does not reflect the final result.
How Swelling Changes Over Time
Swelling is generally most noticeable during the first few days and then gradually decreases. However, it does not decrease at a constant rate.
It may also fluctuate during the day, with less swelling in the morning and more in the evening. Many patients experience this pattern.
Individual Differences
The duration and extent of swelling depend on the procedure, the number of areas treated, your individual healing rate and daily activity.
Another patient's recovery is therefore not a reliable guide to your own.
When to Seek Advice
Consult your healthcare team if swelling suddenly increases, becomes markedly one-sided, or occurs with increasing pain or a change in skin colour.
