Recovery After Liposuction: Week by Week

A general timeline from the first days through the following weeks. Recovery varies between individuals and surgical protocols, so fixed deadlines are not given.

Why Recovery Timelines Vary

Recovery after liposuction varies between patients. The extent of surgery, number of treated areas, individual healing rate and the surgeon's protocol all influence the process.

The timeline below provides a general framework. Your recovery may differ; follow the individual plan provided by your surgeon.

The First Days

Swelling, tenderness and tightness are often prominent in the first few days. Movement is slower and rest is a priority. Compression garments are commonly worn throughout the day during this period.

The aim at this stage is to move without overexertion and follow the instructions you have been given. Pushing yourself does not speed up recovery.

The First Few Weeks

During the first weeks, swelling begins to subside gradually. Everyday movements become easier and many patients start returning to parts of their routine.

Your garment's fit may change during this time. Tell your healthcare team if it becomes loose.

Later Weeks

In the weeks that follow, swelling decreases more noticeably and body contours become clearer. Complete resolution of swelling may take longer.

Some protocols may consider a move to second-stage garments at this point. Your surgeon decides whether and when to make that change.

Being Patient

Recovery is not linear. Some days may feel better than others, and swelling can fluctuate during the day. Many patients experience this pattern.

If you notice an unexpected change, consult your healthcare team rather than interpreting it on your own.
