What Should You Do if a Compression Garment Leaves Marks on Your Skin?

Compression garments are designed to fit closely. Some marks may be normal, but marks that persist or occur with discomfort may need assessment.

Are Mild Marks Always a Problem?

The seams, edges or fabric of a compression garment may leave temporary marks on the skin. These may be more noticeable when postoperative swelling is greater.

It is important to distinguish mild marks that fade soon after removing the garment from pronounced pressure marks that persist.

What Should You Look Out For?

Check the appearance of your skin regularly. Do not ignore changes accompanied by significant discomfort.

Check the Garment's Position

Sometimes the issue is the garment's position rather than its size. Folded fabric or rolled edges can create excessive pressure over a small area.

After putting the garment on, make sure the fabric is distributed evenly across the body without folds.

When Should You Consult Your Healthcare Team?

If you notice severe pain, persistent numbness, a marked change in skin colour or skin damage, consult your healthcare team about using the garment.
