Stage 1 and Stage 2 Compression Garments: What Is the Difference?
An accessible explanation of the main differences between compression garments used during early and later recovery.
What the Two Stages Mean
Postoperative compression garments are often considered in two stages, reflecting needs at different points in recovery.
Not every patient needs both stages. This depends on the surgeon's protocol and how recovery progresses.
Stage 1: Early Recovery
First-stage garments are designed for early postoperative recovery, when swelling is pronounced and mobility may be limited.
They therefore prioritise ease of dressing, accessible closure systems and adjustability.
Stage 2: Later Recovery
As swelling decreases, the first-stage garment may become loose. A second-stage garment may then be considered.
Second-stage garments generally offer a closer fit and a smoother appearance under clothing. This can make a meaningful difference to comfort when returning to everyday activities.
When to Move Between Stages
There is no fixed timetable for moving between stages. The decision depends on swelling, the current fit and your surgeon's assessment.
Tell your healthcare team if your garment becomes noticeably loose.
